Endoscopy is a non-invasive examination method which consists of visually exploring a region of the body, not accessible to the naked eye, using a flexible optical fibre coupled to a camera. The areas accessible by endoscopy are:
In addition to visual exploration, this examination allows for the taking of numerous samples (bronchoalveolar lavages, biopsies, cytobrushes, etc.) and for certain procedures to be performed (extraction of foreign bodies, bloating of stenoses (nasopharyngeal, esophageal, colorectal, etc.), antifungal bathing in the case of nasal and/or sinus aspergillosis, etc.).
For all examinations, general anaesthesia is required, the animal must be presented fasting since the day before.
For colonoscopy, a 48-hour fast is necessary, with prior administration of a hyperdigestible food for one week and laxatives (colopeg, duphalac) for 48 hours.
For respiratory endoscopies, with the possibility of parasitic bronchopneumopathy (angiostrongylosis, aerulostrongylosis), a stool sample from the last 3 days is recommended.
